Some of you may be familiar with the food truck craze sweeping the nation. There are television shows about it, movies featuring food truck romance and commercials with food truck vendors splashed across the advertisement. And up until now, I had never eaten from one. I didn’t know what the hype was about. Boy, was I missing out!
Luckily, the little Orlando suburb of Celebration, Florida (right next to Disney…it has its own fascinating history!) hosts Food Truck Fridays on the second Friday of the month. Located at City Hall, Food Truck Friday offers a variety of food trucks, each with their own specialties from gelato to fifties-diner shakes.
Locals all gather round in their fold-out chairs to chat and eat in the sunset colors of an Orlando summer night. It’s a great, fun community event!
As a first timer, I stopped by two food trucks. One was titled Yum Yum Cupcakes and it had been recommended by a local, claiming ‘the best cupcakes ever!’ were to be found here. I ordered the Little Miss Remix cupcake, a strawberries and shortcake dessert that really (wait for it…) took the cake. Haha. Get it?
For dinner, I ordered a Ruben with homemade thousand island dressing and a kalamata olive salad from the “Posh Nosh” food truck. The sandwich was pretty darn delicious (although not quite as good as the Holiday Turkey sandwich I mentioned earlier!) We sat in the Central Park area and ate our all-American food truck dinner beneath a beautiful blue sky. It felt old school Americana in many ways–gently waving flag, big blue sky, perfectly manicured green lawn and a community picnic atmosphere I haven’t felt anywhere other than on the Fourth of July.
A great way to spend Friday night. Food Truck Friday will definitely become a regular occurrence!
